Neil Gaiman has released a book of his great commencement address, Make Good Art.
When things get tough, this is what you should do: Make good art. I’m serious. Husband runs off with a politician — make good art. Leg crushed and then eaten by a mutated boa…
I didn’t know which of these was best so I went with all of them. Background based on Mr. Gaiman’s fantastic jacket designed by Kambriel. Anyway, lovely bit of advice, really take it to heart.

A writer is a man who has taught his mind to misbehave.

Learn to accept praise. I know, I know, when someone runs up and says “I love your work!” your inclination is to mumble an apology for wasting their time with your crappy art, or to say “It’s not that great.”
Don’t.
This is not about you.
If somebody says “I love your art,” and you say “My art is awful,” then guess what? You just insulted them. You have told them, in effect, that what they love is crap and that they have poor taste. Clamp your teeth down on that urge, smile, and say “Thank you.” If you can’t think of a single other thing to say, I make you a gift of this phrase—”Thank you. You’re very kind.” Say this when you want to scream that you messed up the knees on the horse and the tail on the fox and the eyeballs on the woman. If you have to say it every single time, then do. You don’t have to believe it, you don’t have to jump on the table and say “That’s right, I’m AWESOME!”—
But don’t insult them.

We all need to look into the dark side of our nature - that’s where the energy is, the passion. People are afraid of that because it holds pieces of us we’re busy denying.”

I’m frightened of people who believe in just one story. The advantage of studying literature is that you learn many stories, philosophy, history, etc. You learn that we have commonalities of strangeness and secrets with our fellow humans. Because of many stories, we are that much more open to otherness.

When you’ve planned out a whole story idea in your head and you’re so excited to write it but then you open up a blank word document to begin and realize that you actually know absolutely nothing about it and you’re completely lost in a sea of vague plot details and random dialogue.
Akshully, that prompted me to start writing down the random bits anyway (also, brainfog makes concentrated prolonged writing efforts not-easy). But then, I write in script formats, so maybe I have it easier on that? A few months ago when I had the energy to write a few eps of a project, I just started wherever I wanted in the plot and went from there. Starting from the beginning did not work for my jumpy brain. Also, word docs mean never having to write things in order (cut/paste).

Chelsea and I are going to start an online magazine with a strong emphasis on young girls and women of color, trans girls, disabled girls, non-heteronormative girls, queer girls, fat girls, mentally ill girls, etc etc.
We (Chelsea, also known as popca on tumblr, and I)…
birdartpoetry asked: Mister Gaiman, you’re kickass. I was just wondering, what do you think is the best way to seduce a writer? I figured your answer would be pretty spectacular.
In my experience, writers tend to be really good at the inside of their own heads and imaginary people,…
So I made this because of this.
Feel free to use if you are planning on seducing a writer. Or writer-like person. Or anyone, really.
I thought, I wonder if anyone’s made one, yet. So I looked, and there it was. I love it when things move at the speed of internet.
The internet is a magical place, inhabited by wizards.
